On the 26 Nov 2018, the Chief of Defence Intelligence, South Africa, and other dignitaries visited the Defence Intelligence College. The visit was followed by a tour of the college and the facilities available in the college. The CDI SANDF also delivered a lecture on Intelligence Analysis to the students of the Basic Intelligence Officers’ Course and Document Security Course. The lecture highlighted that Strategic intelligence is required to provide ‘actionable’ intelligence to support national strategy. It was also noted that at the strategic level assessment should be produced to contain in-depth analysis of salient developments, judgements of these developments, identify trends, spell out implications and provide intelligence advice. The lecture went further to state that an intelligence organisation exists primarily to provide analysis to policy makers and decision makers and that the goal of intelligence analysis is to reduce policy maker’s uncertainties, not to make their decisions for them. The lecture concluded with an interactive session with students.
